Million Ideas for Peace Presents:
Cultivating the Art of Active Peace
Seattle Art Museum (SAM), Simons Board Room
 April 12, 2008

A 21st century peace movement will take us beyond the cessation of violence and war and toward cultural practices of peace, such as collaboration, shared innovation and individual leadership.

Million Ideas for Peace: Cultivating the Art of Active Peace was a full-day creative and interactive workshop designed to help people connect their strengths and passions to making everyday contributions to the creation of more just and humane societies.

Our day begins with Million Ideas For Peace founder, Lucy Garrick, facilitating conversations focused on what we call “active peace”. She used her passion as a painter as a metaphor and means for considering what it takes to nurture cultures of "active peace". We contemplated original masterpieces from the collections of the Seattle Art Museum to inspire conversations and connections. And together we will explored. . .

  • How we begin to unravel the complex meaning of "peace."
  • The unrecognized and invisible acts of peace in which we are already engaged.
  • How access what matters to us most in service to a culture of active peace.
  • How to connect to the resources needed to support the cornerstones of peace in the 21st century

In the afternoon participants were treated to an intimate conversation with one of the great thinkers of a generation, Dr. Riane Eisler. Riane shared her views on the cornerstones of peace and ideas from her latest work,The Real Wealth of Nations: Creating Caring Economics.

Our workshop concluded with the creation of a 6-foot floor-standing mobile displaying images that represented our collective commitments for active peace.
